Florida Fishing Charters

Florida has more fishing charter destinations than anywhere else in the continental US, and wildly different conditions at each one. The Florida Keys offer backcountry flats and tarpon. The Emerald Coast runs deep offshore. Tampa Bay and its surrounding Gulf destinations have calm inshore water that works well for families with young kids.

This section covers 12 Florida destinations. Each destination has its own hub page with pricing, trip-type breakdown, seasonal notes, and links to 12 specific decision pages for common booking questions.

Choosing a Florida Destination

The biggest variable in Florida is water type, not location. Before comparing destinations, answer this: do you want protected inshore water (calmer, better for kids and beginners) or offshore Gulf and Atlantic water (rougher, bigger species, higher seasickness risk)?

Best for families and beginners (calm water, inshore options, lower seasickness risk):

  • Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tampa. Tampa Bay inshore, flat calm most mornings
  • Naples. Ten Thousand Islands backcountry, extremely protected water
  • Sarasota. Gulf Coast inshore, redfish and snook in calm bays

Best for offshore and serious fishing (Gulf or Atlantic offshore, bigger species):

  • Destin. Emerald Coast, the closest Gulf-to-deep-water distance on the Panhandle
  • Pensacola. Gulf of Mexico offshore, red snapper and mahi-mahi season runs April to October
  • Fort Lauderdale. Southeast Florida offshore, party boat hub, budget-friendly per-person rates

Best variety (inshore and offshore both available):

  • Key West. Flats, backcountry, reef, and offshore all in one destination
  • Miami. Biscayne Bay inshore plus offshore Gulf Stream access
  • West Palm Beach. Inshore lagoon plus Gulf Stream sailfish, lowest shared rates in Florida

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Florida destination is best for families with young kids?
Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa are the top three for families because Tampa Bay provides genuinely flat, protected water most mornings. Naples and Sarasota also offer protected inshore options. Key West has excellent family-friendly inshore and backcountry trips, but the variety of trip types there can make it easier to accidentally book the wrong one.
Which Florida destination has the cheapest fishing charters?
West Palm Beach has the lowest shared-boat rates in Florida. Typically $50 to $75 per person for a half-day shared trip. Fort Lauderdale’s party boat fleet is also budget-friendly. The most expensive destinations per trip are Destin and Key West, where private charter demand drives rates up, though shared options are still available at both.
When is the best time to fish in Florida?
Spring (March through May) is broadly the best season across most of Florida. Comfortable weather, active fish, and before peak summer heat. Fall (October through November) is the second-best window. Summer is hot but productive for offshore species. Winter slows inshore fishing on the Gulf Coast but is excellent for sailfish and offshore action in South Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach).
Do you need a fishing license in Florida on a charter?
No. In Florida, when you fish aboard a licensed charter vessel, the captain’s vessel license covers all passengers. You don’t need a personal saltwater fishing license. Bag limits and size regulations still apply, and the captain is responsible for keeping the trip compliant.
Is offshore fishing in Florida safe for kids?
It depends on conditions and the child’s age. Open Gulf or Atlantic water is rougher than protected inshore water, and motion sickness is a real risk for young kids. The standard rule: start inshore, move offshore once you know how your kids handle the motion. Most captains who run family trips recommend at least age 7 to 8 for offshore, and age 5+ for inshore.
